Medaka Box
Synopsis: Kurokami Medaka is an exceptional first year student at Hanokiwa Academy who got elected as president of the student council with a smashing 98% of the votes. Extremely intelligent, strong, and rich; she wants to help anyone in need. To do that, she introduces a suggestion box that allows any student to contact her. Later known as the Medaka Box, it will bring forth incredible challenges to Kurokami and her friends of the student council.

Sankarea
Synopsis: Furuya is obsessed with zombies. He collects any figurines, watches any movie, and plays any game with the living dead, and is even only interested in zombie girls. When his cat dies, Furuya begins trying to raise it from the dead using an ancient book of the occult he bought from a shop. But what will happen when he sees the idol of a nearby all-girls school walking close to where he conducts his experiment, wishing to die and be reborn as a different person?

Akagi
Synopsis:
On a cold and stormy night, Shigeru Akagi crawled out of the ocean, stumbled into a dingy waterfront Mahjong parlor and into a rough Mahjong game. Nangu was in heavily in debt and had been offered a chance to gamble away his debts by the yakusa. If that did not work, they had made sure that his life insurance policy would more than cover what he owed them. That evening's tiles had not been kind to Nangu and with nothing left to loose, he decided to take a chance and let the thirteen-year-old Akagi play in his place. The events of that evening are still quietly spoken about and of how a rank-beginner beat the yakusa rep (or professional) player. It was that night that the legend of Akagi - the genius or monster of the Mahjong game - was born.

Arakawa Under the Bridge

Arakawa Under the Bridge 2
Synopsis:
The continuing story of the elite Ichinomiya and the homeless extraterrestrial Nino. The relationship of this unusual pair is, at times, odd and, at times, stifling. However, the days they spend with the weird inhabitants of the riverbed are never dull.

Aria The Animation
Synopsis:
On the planet Aqua lies the watery city of Neo Venezia, a tourist hub in which people travel around in gondolas. Professional gondoliers known as Undines are well-revered as they act as tour guides for the people. Akari Mizunashi is a gondolier in training and also an employee of Aria Company. She gets to meet all sorts of people as she takes them on the gondola rides, from friendly mentors to special individuals, all this admidst the beautiful scenic backdrop of the entire city.

Ayakashi
Synopsis:
Adapted from the 2005 adults-only superhuman battle action visual novel game Ayakashi. Ayakashi is a parasite life force that gives superpowers to its host, taking in return the host's entire life force. Kusaka Yuu is a student that lost his will to live after the death of a dear childhood friend, until the day a mysterious girl, named Yoake Eimu, appears. From that moment on, his life would never be the same again. Hunted by Ayakashi and their hosts, the power within Yuu awakens and a never ending battle begins.

Baccano!
Synopsis:
"Baccano", which light novelist Narita translates as "stupid commotion", is Italian for "ruckus". Each of the stories in the series involves several unrelated plots intersecting and crossing each other as events spiral further and further out of control. Immortal alchemists, mafia operated speakeasies, and many other elements of pulp fiction are mashed together for a world straight out of the movies.

Synopsis:

Beck - Mongolian Chop Squad
Synopsis:
Tanaka Yukio, better known by his nickname Koyuki is a 14 year old who feels disconnected from life in general. Through the act of saving a mismatched dog, he meets guitarist Minami Ryuusuke, and becomes involved in Ryuusuke's new band BECK. Koyuki's life starts to change as the band struggles towards fame.

Beet the Vandel Buster
Synopsis:
It is the dark century and the people are suffering under the rule of the devil, Vandel, who is able to manipulate monsters. The Vandel Busters are a group of people who hunt these devils, and among them, the Zenon Squad is known to be the strongest busters on the continent. A young boy, Beet, dreams of joining the Zenon Squad. However, one day, as a result of Beet's fault, the Zenon squad was defeated by the devil, Beltose. Black Cat
Synopsis:
Train Heartnet, better known as Black Cat, and his title as Number XIII in the secret society Chronos. He continues this life, until one night he meets Minatsuki Saya, a bounty hunter, or more commonly called a Sweeper. She teaches him an invaluable lesson. Blood
Synopsis:
Throughout the passage of time and the shifts in backgrounds, a particular war continues to leave its mark on history, extending its influence into the modern world. There are two major groups involved in the ensuring war. The first group consists of monsters known as Chiropterans who can change their appearances into that of human beings. They are actually immortals who feed on the blood of the living. The second group is an organisation known as the "Red Shield", formed to track down these monsters and exterminate them. Otonashi Saya is a high-school girl who lives a peaceful life with her family. The only problem is, she has no recollections of her life beyond that of the past year. However, her happy life will be destroyed by an event that will lead her to her destined fate.

Blue Submarine No. 6
Synopsis:
Aono Roku Go [Japanese Title] BLUE SUBMARINE NO. 6 takes places in a future time, with the sea levels dramatically risen and humanity on the losing side of a mysterious war. The story revolves around the Blue Submarine No. 6, a futuristic submarine with a talented military crew. The key characters are Hayami Tetsu, a great mini-sub pilot but depressed and aimless, and Kino Mayumi, a cute girl pilot with a strong conviction to fight in this war.

Bus Gamer
Synopsis:
When three complete strangers, Toki Mishiba, Nobuto Nakajyo and Kazuo Saitoh are hired by a corporation to compete in the "Bus Game", an illegal dog-fight conducted in strict secrecy, they are given the team code of "Team AAA" (Triple Anonymous).
This group of three who differ entirely from their living environments to their personalities have to work together effectively, but without mutually wiping out their mistrust of each other or prying into each other's privacy.
They only have one thing in common - each of them need a large amount of money for their own private circumstances. To get the money, they must play in the game despite their very own lives being at stake.

Casshern Sins
Synopsis:
Created as a reboot of the Casshern franchise, Casshern Sins tells the story of a world where robots subjugated humanity after becoming self-aware. Their leader, Braiking Boss, ruled over the world with an iron fist. One day, a mysterious girl named Luna is summoned by the people, in order to bring salvation of mankind. Fearing her as a potential threat, Braiking sent three of his most powerful cyborg warriors to dispose of Luna: Casshern, Dio and Leda. Casshern, the strongest warrior, manages to track down and kill Luna, however, this triggers a cataclysmic event which sets into motion the end of the world. Hundreds of years later, the world's atmosphere is filled with poison, and, due to the inability of most remaining humans to reproduce, as well as the constant threat posed by the robots, humanity is on the brink of extinction.

Robots fare little better, fearing death as much as humans do: the poisonous environment quickly causes their mechanical bodies to rust and corrode, forcing them to constantly replace their damaged parts, if spare parts in good condition can even be found. In this wretched time and place, Casshern, who had disappeared following the assassination of Luna, returns with no memory of who he is or what he had done. As he embarks on a journey to find out the truth about himself, Casshern will discover his true purpose and destiny

Cencoroll
Synopsis:
When a gigantic, unearthly monster suddenly looms on the skyline of a Japanese city, the expected occurs-the Japan Self-Defense Forces roll out the tanks while the public panics. Nobody knows what it is or where it came from, but Yuki, a bold and inquisitive teenage girl, has a secret but might be a useful clue. Her friend Tetsu has been clandestinely caring for a bizarre creature called Cenco, which will soon prove itself to have some remarkable, even impossible characteristics. Another teenage boy, a stranger with some mysterious link to the monstrosity attacking the city, shows up, and his unwelcome interest in Tetsu's pet snuffs out any doubt of a connection-and lights the fuse for the coming battle.

Chaos;Head
Synopsis:
Based on a Japanese visual novel developed by 5bp and Nitroplus, Chaos;Head is a delusional murder mystery story, with strong elements of gore, psychology and science fiction. The game uses a feature called a "delusional trigger", which allows the player adjust the 'realness' or 'surrealness' of the perspective of the main character, which directly affects the storyline.

The main character, Takumi is a troubled young man who struggles to distinguish reality from his delusions, while being pursued by the perpetrator of a series of bloody murders, (or so he thinks). His travels take him in and around Shibuya, Tokyo and his adventures bring him in contact with various scientific themes such as the concepts of matter, antimatter, and the Dirac sea.

Chrono Crusade
Synopsis:
It is after the Great War and the U.S. is experiencing an economic prosperity unlike anything ever seen before. However, all is not well, as the occurences of the ocult and devil-worshippers begin to sprout up all over the country. Enter the Magdalene Order, a special group of exorcist that use tradional methods (holy water and special metal) and infused them into the technology of the time to battle these demons and their summoners.

This is the story of Rosette Christopher, a young exorcist and her close friend Chrono, a demon with a dark history, as they go on a quest to find and rescue Rosette's younger brother, Joshua, from the clutches of evil.

This is going to be a trip!

Cyber Coil
Synopsis:
In this future, a mobile phone like technology has people wear special visors to superimpose coordinated, instant virtual images over the top of their everyday real world. This cyberspace layer, "space", interacts perfectly as you move about or touch things. It even allows children to have advanced Tamagotchi style cyberpets (very tidy!), or to make video calls using simple hand gestures alone.

However, something is happening in Daikoku which the adults have not yet noticed. Cyberpets go missing, dangerous spherical robots patrol the skies and a mysterious gigantic character named Satchii seems connected to it all.

When 6th grader Yasako moves to Daikoku to be with family, her beloved pet goes missing too, and she is drawn into the affairs of a 'Cyberpet Recovery Agency' run by the local children.

Darker than Black
Synopsis:
Ten years ago, a bizarre phenomenon appeared in Tokyo. Three days later, two types of humans with supernatural abilities appeared: emotionless 'dolls' that only do what they're 'programmed' to and wield the ability of surveillance, and powerful 'contractors', feared and hated by the humans that know of their existence. Rationally self-preserving and without the feeling of guilt, it's not long before contractors are used as ideal assassins and weapons of war.

Unable to analyze the phenomenon that created these beings safely, it's decided that a huge wall be built around it, called "Hell's Gate." PANDORA, an international research group, protects this wall and analyzes what little they can, while the government struggles to suppress dangerous contractors and the publics' knowledge of them.

In all the police force's efforts and doll-assisted surveillance of the city, one contractor continues to evade them. 'BK201', as the police force knows him, stands out as an exceptional killer, while those in the syndicate who know him as 'Hei' see him as a powerful, yet strangely irrational contractor...

Darker than Black 2
Synopsis:
In the sequel, Hei and Yin are now on the run after betraying the Syndicate in the previous season. After leaving Japan, Hei encounters Suou Pavlichenko, a 13 year old Eurasian girl who becomes embroiled in the war and politics of the various factions and Contractors vying for power. Meanwhile, Hell's Gate remains standing in Tokyo, after Hei's efforts to stop the Saturn Ring anti-Gate particle weapon from activating. Although Contractors are safe from the danger of having their existences erased, this does not prevent new and old Contractors from abusing their powers. As Misaki Kirihara and her team in the Public Security Bureau deal with the increasing Contractor cases, she also has to keep the Syndicate at bay, who has major positions in the Japanese police and intelligence bureaus around the world. The storyline setting primarily takes place in both Japan and Russia.

Darker than Black OVA
Synopsis:
Tells the story of what happened to Yin and Hei between the first and second series.

DearS
Synopsis:
One year ago, an alien spaceship crashed in Tokyo Bay. As they were unable to go home, the aliens received Japanese citizenship. They were called DearS, meaning "Dear Friends". In order to study the Japanese language and customs, a homestay system was established.

One day, high school student Ikuhara Takeya encounters a DearS girl wearing nothing but a blanket. Due to hunger, she collapses on the street. Much to his embarrassment, he has no choice but to bring this alien, whom he later names Ren, to stay the night in his apartment. She insists on staying, referring to Takeya as "Master". Ren learns Japanese overnight due to her race's high intelligence and linguistic abilities and the help of Neneko, Takeya's childhood friend and daughter of the apartment manager.

Later, Ren goes on to attend Takeya's school, where she is mistaken for another DearS exchange student. However, trouble occurs when the real exchange student, Miu, appears.

Desert Punk
Synopsis:
In the future, Japan is a wasteland. In the Great Kantou Desert, scattered humans eke out a living in the hot sand. Among them, a short-statured man they call "Sunabouzu" makes a living as a bounty hunter. Like a demon of the sand, he seems unbeatable. Yet, like all men, he has a particular weakness for the opposite sex...

DNAngel
Synopsis:
Niwa Daisuke is your average teenager, until his fourteenth birthday. He tries to declare his love to the girl of his dreams, but fails. Suddenly, whenever he thinks about this girl he turns into the legendary phantom thief known as Dark. Daisuke's mother, very much aware of this, makes him turn into Dark and steal valuable works of art for a purpose unkown to Daisuke. As the story unfolds, he learns why, and about his classmate who seems to have the same ability.

.hack//Roots
Synopsis:
In 2015, CC Corporation's datacenter caught on fire destroying "The World". By splicing in data from what would have been another project, CC Corp. was able to rebuild the game. In 2016, "The World R:2" was released. .hack//Roots covers the time Haseo spent with Shino and Ovan in the guild known as the Twilight Brigade, before the .hack//G.U. PS2 games.

Ef - A Tale Of Memories
Synopsis:
The story revolves around the protagonist Hirono Hiro, a poor high school boy who draws shoujo manga for his living. One cold Christmas night after meeting a very strange woman in a church, who tells him that he's going to meet someone he has to meet, his bike gets stolen by another strange girl. He runs after her and finds her collapsed on the street. Her name is Miyamura Miyako and her bag got stolen by a man on a motorbike. Soon after, they start hanging out together, enjoying highschool life. Miyako falls for Hiro pretty quickly but naturally finds a rival in his childhood friend, Shindou Kei, who has been dictating Hiro's life since ever.

Ef - A Tale of Melodies
Synopsis:
In a story set years in the past, Himura Yuu is a studious and diligent young man intent solely on maintaining his top academic position at Otowa Academy. One day, he meets a mysterious girl named Amamiya Yuuko, who, to his surprise, recognizes him. Memories of a distant childhood, memories rather left forgotten...meeting Yuuko again will force Yuu to confront the regrets and sorrows of their collective pasts and presents.

In the present, Kuze Shuuichi may seem like a womanizer, but upon closer inspection, is a man who would rather be left alone. Hayama Mizuki, however, is not the type of girl who would let him be, especially after hearing the beautiful sounds of his violin performance. As Mizuki attempts to become closer to him, Kuze attempts to push her away - the tale of their budding relationship is darkened with undertones of an imminent tragedy.

Suzuka
Synopsis:
To continue his studies, the young Akitsuki Yamato has to go and live with his aunt. He doesn't have to pay a rent but in exchanges he has to maintain the residence. Tales of Eternia
Synopsis:
Based on popular Playstation RPG of same name. Set on a strange world where 2 different worlds look at each other in distance in the sky (think of seeing other world in your sky). Rit, Fara, Kil and Meldi set off on a journey to prevent their world from certain doom, when world above them slowly decend opon their world. Fighting battles with various monsters by sword, martial arts, and summoned spirits, they will discover the secrets of Belcanu island. Can they save the worlds of Infernia and Celestia?

Tales of Phantasia
Synopsis:
Cless Alvein, a young swordsman from the town of Totus, along with his friend Mint Adnade, a healer with the talent of Mana, are sent back in time to defeat Dhaos, a sorcerer imprisoned by their parents decades ago. Along with the help of the archer Chester Barklight, the summoner Klarth F. Lester and the half-elf Arche Klaine, they seek to right the wrongs of Dhaos and return peace to the land. Based on the 1995 Super Famicom Game by NAMCO, "Tales of Phantasia."

Tales of Symphonia 2
Synopsis:
Based on the same-name Game Cube and Play Station game, situation at the end of Tales of Symphonia, The Animation/ Two worlds exist, both unaware of the other, as two ends of an hourglass where sand is mana. In times, the Angels grant their blessing to a Chosen One who must travels to awaken the Spirits guarding mana: that is the world regeneration. Sylvarant is the homeland of the Chosen Colette and her friends, Lloyd, Genis and Raine. When they reached the final stage of their quest, the true nature of the world regeneration was revealed: the Chosen must sacrifice herself and become a vessel for the Goddess Martel. Refusing to let Colette face this fate, Lloyd opposed the Angels, despite the betrayal of Kratos, and they run away to the other world, Thethe'alla. The balance and the secrecy between the two worlds begin to disappear, and Lloyd and his friends must now pursue their quest in Thethe?alla to save Colette and prevent both worlds to crumble. (ANN)

Synopsis:
Tales of Vesperia: The First Strike takes place a few years after the end of the Great War before the events in Tales of Vesperia. Utilizing the power of a powerful substance known as aer the people of the planet Terca Lumireis are in an age of discovery and prosperity. The crystallized form of aer which is known as Apatheia, is considered to be a very powerful energy source as it is essential to human life. In order to protect towns from attacks by monsters large amounts of Apatheia are being produced to create barriers around towns.

One day in a deep forest near the town of Shizontania, Yuri Lowell and Flynn Scifo, two knights who have just joined the Nylen Corps, together with two of their senior knights and fellow Corps members, Hisuka and Shastere, are sent on a mission to investigate an abnormal gushing of aer in the area.

Tetsuwan Birdy
Synopsis:
Tsutomu Senkawa is an average high school kid who is busy studying for his senior entrance exams. Caught in the midst of this chase, Tsutomu gets thrown by the man at Birdy, which kills Tsutomu. Fortunately for Tsutomu, there is a way to keep him alive, although it comes at the price of discarding his body. He ends up merged into Birdy's body.

Trinity Blood (??????????) is based on a series of novels by Japanese author Yoshida Sunao. Sunao's works were originally published in the magazine "The Sneaker". "The Sneaker" targets young adult males and has serialized many popular Japanese novels, including the well-liked Haruhi Suzumiya novels. From the novels came anime and manga adaptations. The manga is drawn by manga-ka Kiyo Kuujou and is serialized in Asuka magazine. The anime is produced by Studio Gonzo and is 24 episodes long. All three works are significantly different.

True Tears

Shinichiro is a student living in what would be a dream come true for most high school boys, but for him is mostly a frustration. A well liked girl in school named Hiromi has lived in his house for a year along with his family. Her father was a close friend of the family, and when he died they immediately took her in. She is popular and well liked, always smiles, is talented in sports- but Shinichiro knows there must be tears inside her. Having an artistic tendency, he makes watercolours of her and thinks about wishing to ease her tears. Yet he cannot bring up the nerve to talk to her even in his own home. She, too, is quiet and withdrawn in their house, quite unlike at school. Shinichiro is also distracted by teasing from his friend Nobuse for watching Hiromi from afar, a curse of bad luck from a strange girl named Noe, and being forced to perform Muhiga dancing. By helping Noe he hopes to ease his own problems, yet he seems to have difficulty helping himself.

Tsubasa Chronicle
Synopsis:
Sakura, a princess from the Clow Kingdom, lost her memory due to a strange incident that happened within an archaeological dig in her home country. In order to regain her memory, Yukito, the Kingdom's mage, sent her childhood best friend, Syaoran, to seek help from the witch, Yuuko. Yuuko tells Syaoran that he has to travel from one alternate reality to another to collect fragments of Sakura's memory. However, even if Sakura regains her memory, she will have no recollection of Syaoran. Along the journey, Syaoran and Sakura meet Kurogane, a warrior who was exiled from his country, and Fay, a mage who wants to move from one reality to another in order to escape from his King. The four characters end up traveling together and an exciting journey through time and space begins.

Tsubasa Chronicle 2nd Series
Synopsis:
Syaoran, a boy who wants to become an archaeologist, and Sakura, a princess from the Clow Kingdom, are childhood friends with a close relationship. On a fateful night, Sakura lost all her memories as a result of a conspiracy to obtain her powers. In order to regain her memory, Syaoran seeks help from the witch, Yuuko. Yuuko tells Syaoran that he has to travel from one alternate reality to another to collect fragments of Sakura's memory. However, even if Sakura regains her memory, she will have no recollection of Syaoran. Traveling together with them is Kurogane, a warrior who was exiled from his country, and Fay, a magician who wants to escape from his King. With the help of a magical creature, Mokona, they set off on an exciting journey through time and space.

Tsubasa Tokyo Revalations
Synopsis:
A separate project from the Tsubasa Chronicle anime, this time handled by Production I.G. and Nanase/Ageha Ohkawa (CLAMP's scriptwriter), Tsubasa TOKYO REVELATIONS are three 25-minutes OVAs covering the Tokyo Arc, which should have taken place in the anime after episode 42. Each of the three DVDs will only be sold in Japan in a special limited edition together with volumes 21, 22 and 23 of the manga.

When Sakura, Syaoran, Fye, Kurogane and Mokona arrive in a strange and desolate desertic world and meet a mysterious hooded group, little can they imagine that the inevitable events that will take place in this world will make their journey take a dramatic turn and change their lives forever...
]]> <![CDATA[Weekly Anime Spotlight! Movie: Dead Leaves!]]> It's (finally) time for a new Weekly Anime Spotlight!

Did you miss me? Sorry for the long wait – school, work, sickness and such had deprived me of watching any anime good enough to become a spotlight. Got some fresh titles loaded in chute now, though, so let's get right back into the rhythm of things, shall we?

Speaking of rhythm, resuming from where we left off, it's time for an OVA/movie.
The WTF from last time continues with Dead Leaves!

Dead Leaves

Dead Leaves is a sci-fi action comedy movie that has ultra-violence, mega-gore, nudity, sex, and enough weirdness to make you question your sobriety. Taking place in a clone-rich distant future, our protagonists, Retro and Pandy, awaken on Earth stripped of their clothes and their memories. The unlikely renegades quickly discover that they have astounding physical abilities. Throwing caution to the wind, they use their powers to wreak havoc upon downtown Tokyo through a crime spree for food, clothing, and transport. It's great fun for all of about five minutes before they are subdued by authorities and are sent to Dead Leaves, the infamous space prison... on the moon.

Imprisoned and restrained in caterpillar-like fashion, they are forced to do hard labor and pick at rocks. The instant our duo get private time, however, they manage to find a way to have such amazing sex that they break their bonds and start a mass prison break. Through their efforts to escape, they discover secret and sinister plans carried out at the facility, manage to piece together what happened in their past, and a baby is born mid-combat, carrying full-auto pistols out of the womb.

...yeah, that happens.

It's like FLCL, Excel Saga, and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann smashed into 47 minutes of non-stop explosions, blood, and boobs.

That said, this movie is absolutely not for kids, and honestly, not for most sane adults. Much of the strangeness can be explained by the fact this studio, Production I.G, is also responsible for such familiar titles as The End of Evangelion, FLCL, Ghost Hound, and Ghost in the Shell.

Turn off your brain, let your eyes gloss over, and enjoy, because there isn't any intellectual stimulus here.

Dead Leaves is a fun, twisted ride full of mindless action suitable for absolutely no one.

A born and raised Enoshima boy, who is easily irritated: Natsuki. 
A mysterious Indian, who keeps watching them from a reasonable distance: Akira. 

These four seem to be wasting their youth, but continue to meet and go fishing on this little island where great things are about to happen... and so begins the unlikely SF (shounen fishing) adventure!

Dusk Maiden of Amnesia
Synopsis: The story takes place in Seikyou Private School. A facility that consists of multiple buildings that connect together to accommodate both junior and senior high school students. Sixty years of ongoing renovations and expansions have meant most of the old inner structures have been sealed and abandoned. Classrooms turned into storage rooms, staircases no longer in use, hallways like dark alleys. With the existence of such a maze-like building, it is only natural that rumours of the paranormal would appear. 

One day first-year middle school student Niiya Teiichi gets lost in this maze and by chance arrives at an old storage room. This is where he meets Kanoe Yuuko, a mysterious girl with raven black, long silky hair and a tall and slender figure, who introduces herself as the ghost of the old school building. For some unexplainable reason Niiya is the only one able to see this spirit and she herself does not have any recollection of the reasons or time of her death, nor any lingering feelings about life itself. Curious about the circumstances of her death the two create a paranormal investigation club and seek to find out the truth about it and the many other mysteries surrounding the school.

Fate/Zero: Second Season
Synopsis: The Holy Grail War is a death-match between 7 magi (Masters) and their summoned heroic spirits (Servants). In this battle royale, the prize is the legendary Holy Grail, said to be an omnipotent wish-granting device which will produce any sort of miracle in order to bend reality to accommodate the wishes it grants. The winning Master and Servant shall be granted one wish each, after which the Holy Grail will not be activated until the next War. 

This second season of Fate/Zero continues where the previous one left off. As the 4th Holy Grail War progresses, several camps raise the stakes, and the challenges only become bigger and more difficult. Each Master and Servant will be faced with the impact of their own shortcomings, and some of the competitors would do well in remembering that deceit and betrayal do not send prior warning...

Late after school, to avoid getting sunburned, Ayumu encounters the alcohol-prone fairy Chris. This overly cute adult in a childs body is up to something... life at school could be so peaceful, if it were not for the enemies of the masou shoujo.

Zetman
Synopsis: Jin is a strange kid with an angel mark on his hand. He lives a poor but peaceful life with his grandfather, along with the other destitute and abandoned vagabonds near the river. Space Brothers
Synopsis: In the year 2006 the kid brothers Mutta and Hibito, on a nightly hunt for animal sounds in the local woods, unexpectedly see a blazingly bright rotating flying object in the sky, right above their home town. After a short moment the UFO accelerates towards the surface of the Moon. Witnessing this, the two youngsters vow to become astronauts and some day travel into space.

Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040
Synopsis: The year is 2040, the place Mega-Tokyo. Armed with highly advanced suits of powered armour, a group of young female vigilantes fights a shadow war against the largest mega-corporation in Japan, GENOM, and their army of mad Boomers ? androids built to replace humans in menial labour jobs, but apparently have an annoying tendency to run rampant. Or so one is led to believe.

The Twelve Kingdoms
Synopsis: Nakajima Youko is class president and an honour student. At home, she is a good daughter, always obedient to her parents. She pleases everyone around her to the extent of ignoring herself due to her lack of confidence. She has nightmares daily and a unique hair colour that cause some friction at home and suspicion at school. 

On a day like any other at school, a strange man named Keiki appears before her. He kneels and swears allegiance to her, promising to protect her and never leave her side. Thereafter they are pursued and attacked by demon-like beasts. In this mix enters two of her classmates who unfortunately happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. To escape the onslaught, Keiki transports them to his world. Unfortunately during the journey they are ambushed and end up separated from one another. 

Now they have to learn how to survive in a new land, one with magic, swords, demon-like beasts and immortals. 

This anime is based on text novels written by Ono Fuyumi. It features a complex fantasy world with a rich mythology behind it. The series tells us not only Nakajima Youko's story, but also stories about other people who came to live in this world.

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED
Synopsis: Heliopolis, a so-called neutral space colony was holding a top-secret weapons research facility, producing Gundams for the Earth Alliance. ZAFT, which is composed of Coordinators (genetically modified/upgraded humans), attacks Heliopolis, stealing 4 out of the Alliance's 5 Gundams. In the battlefield, civilian Kira Yamato stumbles upon the Strike, the last remaining Gundam of the alliance, and is forced to pilot it. In the midst of battle he encounters his best friend, Athrun Zala, as one of the hijackers of the 5 Gundams, who sides with ZAFT. Being a Coordinator, he is the only one who can pilot the Gundam. But Kira is not with ZAFT, even though they're his own kind, nor the Alliance. Since the Alliance is the only place he could turn to at the time, he sides with them. He pilots the Gundam to protect his friends, and to fight his best friend, which pains both of them. It's a war between individual beliefs.

Synopsis: X (the TV series) basically explains what happened in X 1999 (the movie) in more detail and greater depth. Synopsis: The story takes place in Ikebukuro, a district of Tokyo. Teenage punks gang up and fight against each other. The gangsters are afraid of an urban legend called "Dullahan", a headless rider, who rides a black motorcycle without head lights or engine sounds. Ryuugamine Mikado is a normal high school boy who seeks peculiar beings. When he moves in to Ikebukuro, a mad scramble for Dullahan's missing head breaks out.

]]> <![CDATA[Weekly Anime Spotlight! Bokurano]]> It's that time of week again for me to subject you, my dearest readers, to entertainment bliss or possibly even animated torture! To shake things up a bit, I'll be spotlighting something darker this week. The selection won't exactly be family friendly, so enjoy with caution. It's definitely not suitable for our younger fans.

A field trip to the ocean, fifteen middle school children, and a video game. What could go wrong?

Bokurano follows fifteen children on a trip to the sea. By the beach, during low tide, is a cave. Compelled by curiosity and boredom, they explore it. Deep within the cave, they discover computers, cables, and hardware strewn about - all plugged in, turned on, and humming. The man responsible for all this equipment, Kokopelli, finds the children and explains to them that he's developing a video game. The video game is about a giant black robot who has to defend the Earth from waves of enemies. Fifteen of them. Kokopelli wants the children to be beta testers for his game and has them "sign a contract" by placing their hands on a mysterious metal device. Things take a strange turn, however, when immediately upon completing the "signatures", they black out and awaken on the beach, outside the cave. It's night time, so they push aside their confusion and hurry back to their hostel.

One of the children notice something out in the sea, though. A strange, black shape, standing there amongst the waves. It was the robot that was in Kokopelli's "video game", but it was starting to become pretty apparent that this wasn't a video game. The children are suddenly teleported into the cockpit of the robot, where they find Kokopelli piloting it. An opposing robot spawns into existence, and they do battle. As he fights, he gives the children a quick run-through of how to pilot the robot and what it can do. He also explains that next time, one of the children will have to pilot it, and he wouldn't be able to help them.

The battle over, the landscape a mess, the children are returned to the ground as both robots fade out of existence. "I'm sorry", one of the children hear Kokopelli say. The fifteen children will have to pilot the robot against fifteen waves of enemies, all in the name of defending the Earth.

Why?

Why do they have to defend the planet?

Why are alien giant robots attacking at all?

Why do they, middle schoolers, have to do it?

The questions start to stack up as you watch Bokurano, and for every question answered, darker, more sinister plot events stir up only more questions. Bokurano may seem stereotypical at first - with its giant robot that a bunch of kids inherited from some mysterious benefactor - but believe me, it is absolutely not your run-of-the-mill mecha anime. It covers very serious and dark themes and issues, including: death, sacrifice, family problems, unrequited love, scandalous relationships, and rape.

This series is really twisted and fucked up, but really good and definitely worth watching.
